Today, August 15th, we celebrated the life of my mother - Rosemary Carewe. A wonderful, loving mum to me and my sister Anna, who adored sport, walking, cooking and above all theatre,
She was also, before motherhood, a really top class singer who premiered pieces of music by Peter Maxwell Davies and Alexander Goehr and gave the first British performance of Boulez's Le Marteau Sans Maître. As children however we never heard her sing, but we did see her recite Sitwell's poems in William Walton's Façade. Her diction and expressive, musical performance is captured on a recording that I heard for the very first time this week. All I can say is wow!
